Chapter 8 VPS Deployment: Your 24/7 Digital Employee

OpenClaw Is a Separate Employee: The Mental Shift

3 min read Lesson 46 / 65 Preview

A laptop agent is a tool. A VPS agent is a coworker.

The biggest mindset change in this course happens here. The local OpenClaw is something you turn on. The VPS OpenClaw is something you do not turn off. It runs whether you are asleep, on holiday, or traveling.

Practical implications

  • It must be reliable on its own (auto-restart, backups, monitoring)
  • It must be secure in a way a laptop never has to be
  • It must have its own Soul tuned for autonomy ("act, don't ask, when inside scope")
  • It needs its own Telegram channel — do not co-mingle with your local agent's chat

Two agents, two roles

A common pattern after this chapter:

  • Atlas (laptop) — interactive copilot: chat, code, voice, vision
  • Echo (VPS) — autonomous worker: research, scheduling, monitoring, email triage

They can share Skills via a private git repo. They do not share sessions, history, or identity.

The cost

A capable VPS for a personal AI worker is $5–20/month. Most students recoup that in the first week through saved time.

Try it (read-only)

Sketch what your VPS agent would do that your laptop agent cannot. If you have fewer than three answers, you may not need a VPS yet. Most students have 5–10 answers within an afternoon.
